Push 3 Users Thread

Thank you for posting “in the wild” pics!

I have the same philosophy in my studio, but for my portable live setup, I need to be compact so should have devices that complement each other pretty efficiently.

Hapax is currently my brain in the live setup. Where Push 2 is in my studio. I’m thinking of replacing Hapax with Push 3, but it probably can’t. I might replace my Roland MC-707 with Push 3, so in that case Hapax and Push 3 will work together.

Just bought it
Love many aspects…

But can’t find basic elements

Like how to record my samples from my a 4 and place it in a drum rack

Or how to make my own drum rack anyway

Or even how to add an effect on a channel (after a synth) anyway?

As a Push 2 (soon to be Push 3) user, I think it should work the same on Push 3:
I think the easiest way is this:
You can first record one big audio clip with single hits of your a4. Then use the convert button to convert it to a drum rack. It will be split at transients and you can then easily finetune start and end points per drum pad.

Adding an effect should be easy by pressing the + button I think, but this part is slightly different to Push 2 so not sure (yet).

Jup. On an instrument track just press +

I don’t like saying this but it really helps to skim through the manual. Push has quite some dual button combos and not all of them are super obvious. And there’s more handy stuff that won’t be immediately obvious when just starting.

What’s often misunderstood with Ableton in general is that session view is a mixer, sequencer, recorder, looper, sampler, modulator etc etc

Makes me nuts
Especially the lack of table of content

I agree - it is ridiculous, especially now, nearly five months after release.

On mobile yeah. Open on a desktop browser, then it does have a table of contents. And use search.

I agree that it’s not a great manual but it does contain a lot of handy information.

Ever since I started with Elektron machines all other manuals are inferior  @eangman

Hey, I hope you’ll be indulgent with me.
Still have questions about Push 3 SA before plonking down so much cash and can’t always find answers.

I assume all audio is loaded into RAM. Is that right?

Suppose you have a long clip, like a backing track. Or even two of those. Let’s say those tracks have even been frozen so there’s no active effects. Trying to make a simple example. And then suppose you want to record another long clip while having those other two playing. Is there a point at which the RAM can’t keep up? I guess it depends on what else is going on in the project, but for this example let’s say there are only audio clips without effects or internal synths, and you’re recording external audio in.

8 gigs is a decent amount of RAM, so if the system doesn’t use too much, it’s probably not a problem in practice. Just wondering if anyone has experimented with this.

The M8 manual is surprisingly excellent too. But that octatrack manual is close to holy.

I made a suggestion on Center code to allow change the color of the scenes from the push like you can do with the clips.

Anyone know for what is this Max For live Script???

Thanks!
I appreciate it —That’s for Live not Push Standalone.
Maybe they are the same? Ableton don’t always explain well how where Push is different.

You can make your own control surface in Max.
Some info here Control Surface "MaxForLive" ? - Max For Live Forum | Cycling '74

I’ve worked with it in the past quite intensively but can really remember why.
One thing for sure (and I use it with my Rytm) is that it allows sending midi to multiple channels from one single track. This is the only way I found to make a bidirectional control of ie mutes on the Rytm.

The way you have to see it: Push Standalone is Ableton Live.

  • Only a few features are removed: VST support, Max externals
  • Everything else is there (even session view), but you don’t necessarily have access to it from standalone.
  • You can however configure most of these hidden parameter from Live Desktop and then move the session to Live Standalone.
  • So wondering about behaviors like RAM, etc. can be answered through the general Ableton Live manual

Hope this helps

is there a way to collect all and save from the standalone to controller mode… i cant for the life of me work out why it cant find a sample in a drum rack in controller mode. maybe its a pack i dont have on my mac? I cant find the sample on my mac… so i do wonder. if anyone knows where these kicks samples come from please let me know!
DKIK01.aif all the way to DKIK32.aif

EDIT yeah missing pack! House racks by underground sound

That is really helpful. Thanks. And it’s encouraging b/c it makes Push 3 SA sound more capable than I thought it was.
It’s the first thing on your list that made me wonder because I haven’t seen a complete list of what’s missing.
For example, if you look at Push manual under Sampling there’s no mention of Sampler, only Simpler. So I thought that meant Sampler isn’t there. But someone said it is there, you just have to set it in Live up on desktop. Far as I can tell there’s nowhere to find all this info in one place.
I guess I have to buy one and find out that way!

Thanks again

Yes, its indeed quite confusing and hard to find out without trying it.

I’m still exploring these details myself, but so far I haven’t came across much that will not work on standalone once it has been setup or mapped properly in Live
