Raspberry Pi / Patchbox OS Modep

Didn’t want to necrobump any of the existing threads regarding Patchbox OS / Modep.

Is anyone currently using it for anything serious? Being stuck to USB-MIDI kinda breaks my use case.

I’ve tried setting it up with GPIO MIDI with no success so far. Cheapo DIY Midi port for Raspberry Pi The hardware side has been tested working with Minidexed. Only Modep is giving me a headache currently.

Would be interesting to know if anyone here has solved the issue I’m currently struggling with.

does a usb to midi adapter not work with this?
there are plenty really cheap class compliant ones out there.

I don’t use Modep but as for USB-to-DIN adapters, I’ve use a Roland UM-ONE MK2 with a Raspeberry Pi USB Host. They definitely work with Linux.

I have the Patchbox set up on my Pi 4 with the Pisound and it’s pretty solid when I’ve used it.

My Kenton usb midi host wasn’t recognized by Modep. I also wanted to keep the footprint of the device small, and not cause any unnecessary plastic waste. I have now ordered a usb midi adapter cable.

The Pisound Karhide linked above has built in MIDI and stereo in/out, and attaches right onto the Pi. Seems like a very compact and useful setup.

Costs 99 bucks and it’s out of stock currently

i own one, but i wouldnt use it live. cool for experiments though

maybe with modep its more stable. im using max rnbo with it. it can get hot, also sometimes the button doesnt do what i want it to do, which can be frustrating. especially in a live setup. i need plug and play and dont want to think about stuff failing on me

Why I came to this idea was this: Minidexed

It runs on bare-metal Raspberry Pi, boots in seconds and needs no faffing around with usb-midi. Super stable - it’s now in my live rig.

All I’d actually need were a Fluidsynth, that runs headless with maybe a 16x2 lcd display.

Just wanted to update here to gloat that I got it working with MODEP!

Do you mean you got the DIY GPIO MIDI thing working?

I did indeed!

Next challenge seems to be Octatrack’s way of sending velocity=0 instead of a note-off -message. It’s not getting along with MODEP so well. Looks like I need translating of sorts. With a midi keyboard everything works like a charm.

MT-32pi is also bare metal and has a Fluidsynth mode.

It’s definitely an interesting project! I was considering it building it myself too, but based on the documentation the midi implementation is not suitable for musicians. And it’s lacking in configurability as well.

Ooof, well that’s not good.
