I picked up BFD3 recently and I’m realising my finger drumming skills are ok for electronic music but are abysmal for jazz and everything else where a real drummer sound is needed.
So, does anyone here have any experience with any of the plethora of cheap midi drum kits on the market? It doesn’t need to be amazing. It will be studio only and something my kid will probably bang on but it must be sensitive enough to capture a real drumming performance.
And send midi of course. USB would be nice but Din is fine too
I’ve got a Roland TD-8 (mesh heads for that realistic response).
It’s great but might be beyond your budget (£500-£600 2nd hand).
But Roland makes many cheaper options but they don’t tend to have mesh heads - TD-1K seems the entry level one - that has USB-MIDI according to the spec but I’ve not tried it.
I’d recommend saving for a kit that has a mesh head on at least the snare drum to get the expressivity that the ‘bounce’ gives.
Just noticed that Roland do a version of the TD-1K with a mesh snare head - TD-1KV!!
Funny, I was looking for that exact one but couldn’t find it.
I may be wrong but I think they put out a new model, the TD-02K.
I think I may end up with one of those.
Thank you!
You’re welcome! Remember you can often swap the ‘brain’ part out for a better one later from the same manufacturer, pretty sure you can with the Roland ones - check before relying on that though. Hope you find what you need.
I’ve been wanting to get my kit out of storage for a while - space is limited at the moment but feeling inspired to figure something out now!
Nord drum is on the list but I’d like the natural stance of a drum set.
I used to own a really nice kit back in the day and want to get some old tunes on print so need to pretend I’m a drummer again
