Record Audio from Class Compliant USB into Ableton along with other audio from A/I

Hi Guys,

I have a Focusrite 2i2 with 2 mono synths hooked up on a Windows 10. In Ableton Live these are routed o 2 Audio tracks. Next to it I want to connect my DT and DN. Where the DT is my master clock. So I don’t want to use overbridge. Just record the plain sounds from every unit. So with the new Class Compliant USB feature i was thinking this was possible. But I can’t select the Audio source from the DT or the DT. It only shows the 2 inputs of my Focusrite Audio interface.

How can I fix this?

Thnx in advance.

You’d have to create an aggregate device in your audio-midi settings with your Scarlett, DT & DN outside the DAW and then select that as your audio input/output source.

I don’t think you can make aggregate devices in Windows. Using the overbridge plugin to bring the Digi boxes audio in is probably your best bet.
Once set up you can just leave the plugin window closed if you don’t want yo use it.

Thnx! That’s a bummer. Yeah I just don’t want to use OB. As I don’t want Ableton to be the master but the DT. Also the DT provide sequencing for the other synths. That doesn’t work with OB on.

Also without the A/I I can’t get the DT audio thru USB. Does it pop-up as a separate A/I?

It’s possible in Windows, there’s 2 ways actually.

The first involves the use of audio loopback, which your audio interface doesn’t have.
The second is http://www.asio4all.org/, you can make an aggregate device with that.
Just don’t expect rock solid behaviour and expect a drop in performance and possibly some latency issues.

Hi, what’s the way via audio loop back? I feel a bit slow and can’t imagine it. I have an rme ucx and am interested in recording the Digitakt via USB.

Thnx, but for now I have dusted off my Mixer and insert them the old fashion way with analog cables. Was hoping for more room with the USB connection. But I want it to be steady.

With an RME, you can use the loopback to record any of the hardware outputs.
You have two options:

  • Go to Windows Settings > Sound > Sound Control Panel(under ‘Related Settings’) > Recording
    Select Digitakt input, click ‘Properties’.
Under tab ‘Listen’, enable ‘Listen to this device’.
Under ‘Playback through this device’, select an unused output of your RME.
    Loopback that output.
  • Install VoiceMeeter or VoiceMeeter Banana. https://www.vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/index.htm
Under ‘Hardware Input’ select the Digitakt input.
Under ‘Hardware Out’ select an unused output of your RME(WDM output, not ASIO).
    Loopback that output.

Now you can record the Digitakt using just the RME driver.

I would advise to go the VoiceMeeter route because it can be easily enabled/disabled, you can mix a couple of devices together and it supports all kinds of drivers including ASIO.

Wonderful! Thanks so much, I had no idea, though I had a hunch this would be possible somehow. This is very specific, I’ll try it soon.
