Selling gear- PayPal or bank transfer?

Hi.

As the title says it´s about selling gear here and how to do it the best way for both parts.
I don´t have much experience selling online, mostly been buyer/traded stuff or sold locally.

What´s there to thing about regarding currency, bank transfer, PP fees and so on. I think the max amount for a deal would be under the 1000 Euro mark(if that makes any differents).

Please share your thoughts, ideas and possible workaround regarding buyer/seller fees.

Thanks

Generally I use PayPal. To avoid the taxe ask for a “transfer of money to family or friends” option. If you do that few times per year, in Europe, you won’t pay taxes.

Please consider that Paypal gives the buyer a 6 month moneyback warranty, verified and granted by a paypal department. They check the buyers claim according to your original ad. You can formally object but they are to decide whos right. 6 month can be a long time for sensible gear, people you don’t know play with.

No problem with using paypal for discogs but not for gear

Thanks for the response guys.
6 months is a bit too much so it looks like I rather sell locally with face2face handover of gear and money.

best!

I try to encourage local pickup for cash, but it rarely happens. Bank transfers - never happens. The local market for me is far too small to not accept paypal. So far its all gone smoothly - but I only sell good quality gears, highlight any potential issues, go overboard on the packaging and always require a signature.

If anybody tries to do the dishonest thing, then in the long run that’s their problem not mine.

Meant to say “never happens”. Would gladly accept them over dealing with paypal but nobody ever chooses that option.

I’de be weary of bank transfers, especially more so if dealing with things from abroad. I had a guy in France last week who was selling a mixing desk. I wanted to collect and was willing to drive from the UK but then he started talking about it was easier to post and to bank transfer. I didn’t really want to agree as I didn’t have many details for him so just got him to send his bank transfer details over (as I wanted to see if this guy was for real or what.) Guess what? He was Nigerian.

I prefer souls.

Depends on who you’re dealing with… I’ve had cats send me serious cash, but I’m legit. Likewise, I sent serious cash, but I know they’re legit, Randoms though… really depends on the gear etc.

Seriously though every cat knows a cat…

As a seller I’m asking bank transfer for people without any feedback, otherwise Paypal it’s ok.
As a buyer, anything goes if I can trust the counterpart, otherwise Paypal “good and services”.
Never had a problem following this pattern.

The problem many sellers are now having with the “new and improved” PayPal is all too-often buyers are abusing that 6 month window and only using that time to play with gear and quite often want a refund because “did not work out for me”, and unfortunately, PayPal and Ebay tend to lean towards the buyers rather than sellers. It’s becoming important to place within listing, “No Returns/Refunds Accepted”, just to place emphasis on not wanting any drama.

Bank Transfers are what scammers LOVE to use. Go on gearsluts and in classifieds you will see listings of known scammer sellers and buyers and almost each and every time the scam involves a Bank Transfer. You also have to be very careful about making a PayPal “Gift or Donation” as you have little to no protection there as a buyer or seller without anything documenting the actual item and serial number of item.

Craigslist is also the underbelly of the internet. In my major metro city in USA the thugs have been waiting to rob the seller or even critically injure them SO often that all the local community police dept.'s are urging ALL craigslist exchanges to take place IN FRONT of local police dept.'s in their parking lots and place that in your description as it weeds-out MANY potential scammers that way alone and above ALL, do not be allowing strangers to respond to an ad and come to your studio or apartment/flat because it’s also been established that many are only coming to CASE YOUR PLACE for a future little gift called a robbery.

I wrote all this because a few years back I was meeting someone to sell them something I listed on craigslist and I was met with he and his “friend” in an attempt to carjack and rob me. That did not happen as my military training set-in and disarmed the situation. Not everyone is this lucky. One of those two thugs was placed in prison for life because a couple months later he went in and shot-up a petrol station manager 20 times as he was closing-up shop…that could have easily been me or anyone here trying to sell gear. Be careful out there. This is not your great grandma’s world out there these days.

Yeah, it sucks out there these days. I’d almost rather give away gear I no longer use nor want than to deal with potential thugs.
