On Syntakt you can track the filter cutoff frequency with pitch. So if you play a low note on your keyboard, the filter only opens a little, but if you play a high note, the filter frequency opens more
Unless you pick up a mk1 Rytm, which looks great sandwiched between a pair of Digi boxes.
My preferred combination at the moment is mk1 Rytm and Syntakt. A bit of duplication, sure, but I like having 6 of those DVCO-capable tracks and the Rytm freeing up Syntakt for more melodic duties (SY Swarm, filter tracking etc.)
Filter key tracking lets you assign a parameter for how much the filter cutoff âfollowsâ the note played as you go up and down the keyboard. So at 0, the filter cutoff is a fixed frequency, and will always attenuate any notes played above it. But if you increase it, then the filter opens up more relative to the note being played. Itâs very useful.
I think this is a good point about the Syntakt, that it:
It really is very complementary to the DT and DN. With all of the sonic territory you can cover between the three, the same form factor and workflow as the others, and all of the routing options you have with them each being 2-in mixers, there is very little you canât do with the DT/ST/DN trio.
A lot of people do say that 2 Elektron boxes at a time is enough, and itâs largely true I think with the exception of the Digis, where their UI/UX similarity really glues them all together in a cohesive setup.
The AR has some real tricks up its sleeve in terms of performance macros, etcâŚbut I think in this case, wielding it along with your DT/DN might be a bit of juggling operation to really get everything out of all three boxes.
it doesnt matter how these boxes look together
I agree on using Rytm mk1 with single cycle waves, if you want more synth tracks. It sounds good through the analog filter and overdriveâŚ+ all the performance & scene options are worth it!
I donât think youâll be unhappy either way tbh, go with your gut.
Itâs less of a limitation once you remember that trigless locks+slides and motion recording exist
Plus OP has Digitakt, so plenty MIDI LFOs there.
cant speak for the syntakt but i just got a rytm mk2 a few days ago and the level of control you can have is making me rethink my whole setup, granted i also have an a4mk2, digitakt and digitone so i was familiar with the workflow but the speed in which you can create variations using scenes and performance mode opened up a whole world for me, and ive had it for less than a week. cant wait til im fluent with it
People should have told me earlier
If thinking just drums, which of the two rule?
Each has something the other doesnt. One has two lfos, one has slides. One has samples to cover the gaps, the other we have been assured will receive new machines that may or may not cover more bases. As it stands, rytm is stronger in a lot of ways but Syntakt has its advantages and may come out on top after updates
When I had Syntakt I thought it sounded quiet and not especially characterful. On the same exact presets, weaker than Model Cycles even.
had both, kept the RYTM mk2
it is such a beautiful and fun instrument
the pads, the performance/scene and the fx track is what I missed most from Syntakt
had both, kept the Syntakt
The Rytm IS a beautiful machine and has an unmatched sound character 100%!
The Syntakt is a little more engaging for me though and also sounds really freaking goodâŚ
In the end for me, the Syntakt had more variety in the sounds it could do. Also, the form factor played a role in who stayed and who went. So thereâs that too.
Itâs interesting how the internal sample rate and probably gain staging and summing have affected the result sound on the same algorithms (I think it was discussed before).
