The Big Elektronauts Hip-Hop Thread: production tips, sharing our music, feedback and inspiration

Q-Tip’s production on LL’s new (and best record since the 90s for me) The FORCE is amazing, as always. Kinda blown away but I’m not surprised coming from Tip.

What’s good everyone? I’ve only ever lurked on the 404 thread with the intention of signing up which I’ve done after seeing this thread as well.:facepunch:

Still got the magazine that was published in.:v:

It’s so damn good. One of the dopest things to me at this point (as a 40 year old person / 50+ year old culture) is seeing my musical heroes continue to evolve. RZA just scored a classical album, Andre is getting his Flute explorations on… but Q-tip is a humble production GOAT and LL sounds great on here.

Oooo, I have to check that RZA album out. Also, if anyone missed it, Andre just put an hour and a half video on YouTube of him sitting in a very chill space with a candle and just listening to his flute album while stretching. It’s more than I could have ever hoped for.

Yeah @woolsee I was thinking the same thing. I’ve been listening to LL since Radio and Tip since Buddy and I’m just about their age and I’m absolutely thrilled they’re still making such great music. Andre, too. But then Andre and Tip are more like jazz cats to me in that they’re gonna age artistically with continued curiosity and exploration in their creative blood. The FORCE is a stone cold banger.

New joint I had way too much fun making. It’s also available on Bandcamp if anyone is interested. Aldrinic | Wool See

Waiting for my Roland P-6 to arrive and have gone down the rabbit hole on old drum machines and sampler videos.

Here’s a different flavor of lo-fi for you to study to. 1994 Memphis rap. Roland DR-660, Yamaha SU10, Alesis drum machines, cassette four tracks. Got me trying to figure out how to do melodic horror 808 cowbells on my TR-6S.

Tommy Wright III…that cover.

Hadn’t listened to the mix in years but put it on while doing some cleaning just now. Just started side B, its so fn good. Thanks for reminding me of it :slightly_smiling_face:

From the description “If Second Line is celebratory funeral music, this is its mirror: hypnotic swirls of robot cowbell to premeditate murder to.”

Mix looks great, love that description. Haha. I’ll put this on today. Thanks!

Here is a fun little mini documentary/primer on Memphis rap. Welcome to Hell.

And this guy has a whole channel (The Toilet Zone) devoted to recreating that stuff on 1990s hardware. Alternate universe DAWless jamming and lofi.

I need to track down the samples from the old DR202 and DR606. I’d like to add some to my TR-6S. Anyone know where to get these?

Awesome. Glad you like it. Thankfully it has a memorable name so was able to find it. Reading your post had me thinking ‘wasn’t there a good mix from rap blog era about Memphis cowbells’ If murderbells didn’t come up in search I’d have probably left it at that.
Now I’m envisioning a joke along the lines of:
“More COW-Bell?! Don’t you know that meat is murder?!”
“You’re right! Needs more murderbells”.

Will check those links soon. Should probably dive into Tommy Wright at some point. I’ve heard alot of his stuff over the years and always loved it but never went too deep.

Portablism website had the SC500/1000s on sale again last week. All gone now.
They told me they reissue a small amount each month. Will get one later in the year after moving homes.

Thanks, man. So unexpected to find a tape devoted to that. I was bumping it while walking around town the last day or so. I even loaded up some DR-660 samples on the drum machine today and was having some fun experimenting with my own “murderbell” patterns.

Looking forward to hearing how they sound through the new lofi sampler coming later this week. On those old tapes they often remind me of 8-bit Nintendo sounds. :space_invader:

Hey SP Friends!

I won the SP-Forums Arena SP Battle last week and am hosting a new one!

In case you have already have an account and some sort of SP (P-6 included).

I hope I made this in a respectful manner, but It is Oktoberfest themed!

I spent a long time curating the samples, but they are all German except for some drums from my syntakt! Even if you don’t get a chance to participate help yourself to the samples! But would love to have some more participants!
