TV Show Recommendations

I feel like most TV shows are too long with too much filler. I sometimes like a good limited series. But these are some of the best shows I’ve seen in recent years…

The Returned - original French version - very eerie - dead people return to life. Not in a zombie way, but in a wtf do we do with these people? kinda way. Highly atmospheric and thought-provoking.

Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul - most people have probably seen these already, but if you haven’t, give it a shot.

Godless - a good western. Just when you think a genre is too played out.

Midnight Mass - we heard you like vampires

Atlanta
Which was already mentioned. But so damn good. Goes so many unexpected places.

Breeders was surprisingly good. Dysfunctional family life, a lot of the story lines hit a little too close to home, but we could console ourselves with the fact we weren’t as bad as them.

There’s been a ton of good comedy coming out of Australia recently. Colin from accounts, Fisk, the Let Down, Wellmania.

I’ll be sure to check out Mr Inbetween. Thanks.

The recent Ripley on Netflix with Andrew Scott was pretty great. Very unsettling, beautifully shot and crafted, excellent acting.

Also sad, but felt it had run it’s course… final season was a bit meh for me…

TV comedy in general feels like it’s lacking in atm… here’s some shows from the last few years I’ve really enjoyed though -

US

The Curse - a comedy in the loosest sense but definitely has it’s moments. If you’re a fan of Nathan Fielder, the cinematography of the Safdie brothers or the music of OPN it’s a must see.

How To with John Wilson - again very loose take on what people might generally consider a comedy, but really incredible and fascinating documentary filmmaking with lots of very funny moments often found in the interviews with oddball New Yorkers and hilarious b roll editing. Produced by Fielder.

UK

This Country - mockumentary set in rural Britain. Genuinely hilarious (although helped by having lived in places similar to the setting), incredible writing and performances by Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper, although very much writing what they know.

Stath Let’s Flats - Went under the radar for a lot of people (including myself until last year) but very very funny. Can take a while to engage with Jamie Demetriou’s Stath character (I know some people just find him annoying and can’t get past it) but the writing is brilliant and don’t think anythings made me laugh as hard as this did in recent years.

Australia

Colin from Accounts - best new comedy series I’ve seen. Nothing groundbreaking but great script, plenty of laughs (always found Aussie humour is very similar to British humour) and great chemistry between the central pair.
If you enjoyed this it’s worth watching their series before this ‘No Activity’

In terms of shows that might not be as well known as they should be, I‘d whole-heartedly recommend „The Bureau“. Amazing french spy series.

One of my all time favourites.

Also loved DEVS, which is similarly esoteric at points, and Maniac.

Tales From The Loop was good. Severance.

Somehow managed to start of brilliantly but still get better season after season!

Just started Utopia. Given there appears to be an Aus version of The Office coming soon, it seems a bit pointless after Utopia has already nailed it long before.
