I was going to mention the same one. Great show. Not too drawn out either, which I really appreciate. Directed by Ben Stiller. He’s doing a good job at directing these days. He also has another show worth watching - Severance, on Apple TV. Kind of dystopian office sci-fi. Patricia Arquette is in this one too.
I just finished homecoming. I only watched it because they made it free (on freevee). Mostly drama, suspense, conspiracy genre but deals with some topical and ethical issues. Not the type of TV show I would usually watch but to be honest it was pretty good. Definitely better than expected or than the name implies. Lots of career film actors.
general thoughts
Cast is very good, lots of professional career actors mixed with various unknown (to me) talent. Quite a lot of intrigue and some suspense which they managed to pivot and keep the interest going for the shorter second season, so it felt mostly cohesive.
Hadn’t even heard of it and took a chance so thought I’d mention this one for those struggling to find something they haven’t already seen. I had no idea what the plot was about going into it so I don’t think you really need any specific knowledge or to already be into any niche genres to enjoy it, but I’ll say that even if the first episode doesn’t grab you 100% it’s worth watching at least one or two more and they manage to do a lot with like a 30 minute-ish run time so it’s not too long of a per episode commitment.
I’d say that the 7.4 or whatever rating is earned and not just generated by hype and since I didn’t see it mentioned previously I’m confident giving atleast a casual recommendation on this one.
Oh cool, and he also did the movie Leave The World Behind, which I really liked, and would also recommend. That one is on Netflix. I’ve sort of become a fan of most things Sam Esmail has done.
I’m currently a few episodes into the second season of the Tick and after finishing the first season I honestly think that this is pretty damn good. Really funny and campy in a smart way. Too bad this one got the axe.
Fargo, all seasons.
Goliath.
Perry Mason HBO.
Rake -Australian version
One I have to single out since it got sort of lost in the streaming options is PATRIOT on Amazon Prime , very original dark comedy with a great visual sensibility. I sense a Wes Anderson influence.
I just finished the new Shogun miniseries last night. As a teenager, I read that book every summer, and it remains one of my all-time favorites. It’s impressive how many of the little moments they got right. That made the changes that the showrunners made (some small, some big) all the more jarring. The back half also felt very rushed. With an extra two episodes, it would have had some room to breathe and let you live in that world (the way you do in an 1100 page book).
That said, the series was excellent. Toranaga, Mariko, and Yabu (especially) absolutely owned the screen.
Agreed. My wife and enjoyed Broadchurch. It was bizarre to see that Fox made an American version of that, kept David Tenant but changed the name to Gracepoint. Felt like I was in an alternate reality when I saw it advertised. Never watched it. Best plan would’ve been to just air the British version.
It’s a good show, at least for quite a while. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say the ending of the show was controversial among fans and watchers.
I think the first 3 seasons are the best part. I enjoyed the actual finale of the show but found the last few seasons to drag a bit. The character dramas, while not the deepest writing in the world, and a bit dated, are engrossing enough. It’s one of the more perfectly serialized dramas I’ve ever watched.
