Yes I feel closure. Its more that I remember watching the first season so clearly and that it was so long ago. Had Larry with me for all of my adult life and now he is gone. I feel lost without the moral guidance. Curb is my Dallas.
Anyone watching Shrinking? Somehow this week’s episode came out on Tuesday, a day early for me, but everywhere online is saying it came out Wednesday.
I enjoy it , it’s quite soft and cozy … similarly there’s also somebody somewhere , set in middle America … it’s feels very improvised and feels very different to most shows.
Penguin - good
From - good
Before - good
The franchise - started good …
I think I’m so partial to Shrinking due to my love of Ted Lasso.
The Penguin is blowing my mind. I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying it.
I basically am only watching The Franchise for Himesh Patel. Love that dude!
Station 11 was good too… stick with it…
That’s where I first saw him. Great show! Very different from the book, but different enough that it kept me engaged.
Rewatching The Vampire Diaries with my daughter (13). Apparently, it’s a thing at her school. I’ve first watched it from 2009 to I-don’t-remember-if-I’ve-watched-every-season. I got to say I’m still enjoying the Series.
I’m sure most of you have already seen these but I rewatched them recently and they hold up pretty well. Both are limited series with not too much filler, just how I like it.
I tend to like shows that revolve around a small-ish cast of characters, maybe set in a small town or unique and insular out of the way places. This one has a vibe like that, but scary and foreboding. It’s a slow burn over 7 episodes, but worth it. Some great writing. Maaaaybe a few too many actorly monologues, but they’re done fairly well. And there’s vampires.
Set in Wales. Large haunted estate, green hills and forests, a village keeping a secret. Slow burn over 6 episodes. Beautiful girl (and she’s a cellist) trying to remember her past. Secret Druid societies?
Based on recommendations from here (either this thread or the movie thread), I started watching Le Bureau des Legendes - I’m hooked. Extremely enjoyable watch so far (I’m about halfway through the third season).
Penguin from before the franchise.
Hi from three weeks later. The Tales from the Loop soundtrack was also incredible, I’m not really a collector but I picked it up on vinyl. Mark my word, this Philip Glass kid is going places.
Has anybody seen Los Espookys? It’s surreal and deadpan and morbid but also cozy and kind of sweet, but mostly just very funny. Kinda feel like I’d follow Julio Torres off a cliff tbqh. Also, super fun darkwave stuff soundtrack.
cross (amazon)
after a few episodes i think i’m done… its all so obvious , derivative and generic… but its enough to get made,.
i might watch final episode , i doubt i’ll miss much.
Sunny (apple tv)
nice light investigative thing set in japan with a robot, yakuza ,
Day of the Jackal (sky tv in uk)
good drama, godo performances…
The Franchise.
overall its good.
Silo Season 2!
Pen15
funny as fuuu
again, a birra a masterpiece.
I also enjoyed Sunny, good cast and a good concept.
I’ve been watching The Franchise and felt the same way. It’s the type of show that is funny, but i never laugh… Does that make sense? Kind of like The Simpsons.
It started well but lost it a little towards the end.
I don’t watch simpsons … if it comes on tv I turn it over / off … I’m more of an invader zim / ren and stimpy fan.
Twin Peaks and The Wire are best shows ever. I watched Twin Peaks many times and The Wire is the only other show I am considering to rewatch.
This year there were 3 really great things aired: Presumed Innocent, Boy Swallows Universe and Penguin. And quite enjoyed Sugar as well, but not sure if it was good or not…
I made a list of some of my other favorites (I left some of those already mentioned). The ones I recalled in last few hours anyway:
Beef (2023) - don’t know why this came to my mind first, but it was such over the top fun
The Shrink next door (2021) - Will Ferrel and Paul Rudd in roles I wouldn’t expect. Strange story based on truth.
Living with Yourself (2019) - also Paul Rudd - substantially lighter watch than the one with shrink
The Act (2019) - alarming drama about toxic mother-daughter relationship. Great Patricia Arquette performance
Escape at Dannemora (2018) - Patricia Arquette reminded me this one - also incredible story (that only life itself can write)
Hit and Miss (2012) - if you ever want to watch a show about transgender contract killer, this is the one
Counterpart (2017-2019) - double portion of J.K. Simmons. Nice spy sci-fi.
Maniac (2018) – tasty weird stuff
Wayward Pines (2015) – great wtf twist, but stop after first season!
Barry (2018-2023) – the middle of 2nd season is one of top TV moments
The Knick (2014-2015) – brilliant show, brilliant soundtrack by Cliff Martinez
Mare of Easttown (2021) - easily one of best crime drama of last years
Rectify (2013-2016) - this one almost nobody knows and it is a pity. Convicted guy, waiting for death penalty is released after 19 years on basis of DNA test and returns in his home town.
Years and Years (2019) - dystopic and humorous - world going wrong from a view of ordinary family…
Big Little Lies (2017-2019)
Sharp Objects (2018)
Broadchurch (2013-2017) - try at least first season (and read about the filming process AFTER)
Olive Kitteridge (2014) - Frances McDormand at her best
The Fall (2013-2016) - fun fact: characters are named after guitar brands, so detective Gibson is chasing serial murderer Spector
Bosch and Bosch: Legacy (2014-?) - liked it that much, that after I binge watched the series I also binge red all novels by Michael Connelly. 36 books at that time in maybe 10 months. He is also author of Lincoln Lawyer - it’s a pity both series are made by different productions, because in books Bosch and Haller are half brothers…
Waco (2018)
Mr. Robot (2015-2019) - didn’t really like the ending, but some episodes are top notch and really suprising in their form. Also great cinematography/framing…
Black Bird (2022) - interesting story from prison inspired by true events. Very creepy bad guy.
Ozark (2017-2022) - last season is little over the top, but liked it anyway. Never really paid attention to Jason Bateman, but he is great here.
Defending Jacob (2022) - brilliant screenplay and distribution of information
OA (2016-2019) - beautifuly weird fantasy/sci-fi
Six Feet Under (2001-2005) – one of best ending ever
