You wouldn’t like my wife’s salon then - there’s usually been lots of Bonny “Prince” Billy and Handsome Family on the playlists there… or was until switching to FIP radio (though they play both too).
One of the things to bear in mind about hair salons is that most of the time the music is put on for the stylists’ benefit as much as the clients’, if not more so ; there’s certain music that suits the rhythm of the work and a whole lot that really doesn’t.
dubstep or nu metal
I wouldn’t worry…I have been cutting my own hair since I was 14. The barber never did it right. So I learned to do it myself
Always a good option; bet you’re really good with a mirror now too.
Word.
What kind of hipster barbershop has a DJ!? I guess mine is no better… It’s full of sports memorabilia and they’re always playing Vin Diesel movies on the TV. It’s like they’re shouting “we are men and we like man things!!”. I like the way they cut my hair though, so I tolerate it for the half hour. I don’t think i could handle a DJ though – if the DJ was good, I wouldn’t want to have scissors and razors near my head, and if the DJ was bad… Well, that would suck too.
All-over and very short!
Sounds like a similar place Definitely not hipster though … I’d probably have felt more at home if it was haha
This is real copy from their website:
We use traditional methods within a modern & relaxing environment - a place where men can be men.
Turns out the DJ was just a Friday thing, I was lucky!
We’ve had DJs (sometimes one playing 78s - is that hipster enough, I wonder?) and live music in and out of the salon before, for art openings, during local music festivals and car-free days; so I suppose I have DJed in (or just outside) a hair salon quite often, sometimes with a substantial PA in tow, with or without live acts too. Yes I have played my own music while setting up at 9am on a public thoroughfare …
Patriotic theme songs.
Glad to see that (like the clippers) didn’t go over anyone’s head…
One of the reasons I choose the barber that I do is that it’s the haunt of crusty old Fijian-Indian men. They don’t play music. The only sound is clippers, and perhaps a radio murmuring almost inaudibly from the back room. ASMR for real
Barry White would probably make me feel a little uncomfortable. The only exception being if it was an attractive lady cutting my hair, and even then what can you really say in that situation to make things not creepy (assuming the hairstylist is more musically inclined and is listening to the lyrics and not just the groove). Barry’s intense moans though…
Haha, great thread and great timing! I was today having a haircut with a barber that I’ve become friends with during the last 6 years, and we spoke about this exact topic. He’s super cool old school English punk rocker who became a traditional barber, probably in his mid fourties. He’s always had great taste for good music and it’s always a nice surprise to hear what he’s playing when I visit his shop. Today he played me some old jazz classics, but also some new Ukrainian black metal jazz, can’t remember the name but it sounded awesome.
Without knowing about this thread I asked him what would be the worst possible music he could play at his shop and he pointed at his electric guitar next to his desk: “You don’t wanna hear me play that!”
Lol this is literally what I heard today and it was awesome! Read my previous post!
