Windows borked my Ableton install (a small rant)

So, in preparation for the Push 3, I decided to finally update Ableton from like 1.1. For some reason automatic updates don’t work for me, so I downloaded the installer, set it to replace my existing install, all good. It got most of the way through, and then it hung with 0 seconds left for a few minutes. I walked away to get a drink. I looked over, and Windows had installed an update and rebooted during the Ableton reinstall. It had deleted some folders, but not others, meaning I had to uninstall Ableton and manually delete some folders.

Thankfully, I’d had the foresight to back up my project files, but not my templates, which means I’m going to have to reconfigure a lot of things because those files are just gone. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s extremely inconvenient and I can’t believe that Windows would kill an installation process to force a reboot for an update. That’s just asinine in the worst way. Thank god it wasn’t something I use to make money.

It totally borked it… :frowning:

There’s no excuse for windows update behaviors 90% of the time. The fact that you can’t disable most of them is so heavy handed that you would think your computer belongs to microsoft and not the other way around.

Windows and their updates. I get so many calls a week because of them. Now you can only pause the update service, which I highly recommend when doing anything of importance.

Hope you get it sorted!

It’s absolutely absurd. There was no warning whatsoever, no option to tell it to delay the update. It just… updated. I hadn’t turned on my computer in a few weeks so I’m sure I was several updates behind, but it usually at least gives me a pop up.

I’m not sure if that’s the same on windows but on mac every version of live gets its own directory and the templates are stored there, they are not deleted when installing a new version but the content is copied or moved over to the new version, it’s worth taking a look inside wherever live installs it’s stuff to see maybe the templates are still there but in a different folder just not copied because of the reboot

or this one

Yeah, I looked in that folder specifically. The other files were there but the templates were not, weirdly. The installer would no longer let me replace my old installation, only do a fresh install, but I couldn’t do the fresh install with those folders existing so I had to nuke them. I uninstalled live but the installer gave me an error until I remove those folders.

At the end of the day it’s fixable and not the worst thing in the world, I just can’t believe the windows updates function like they do.

yeah it’s nuts, I keep hearing about people loosing their data because of it

Fuck me, what a nightmare.

Still, could have been worse I guess.

Fuck windows.

I find it unacceptable to be perfectly honest. Some of the updates this is regarding should absolutely be optional, they are non-essential and if I don’t give a shit if my browser is not up to date it shouldn’t bother microsoft either.

You can disable auto updates if you want, small amount of leg work but totally doable…

How to disable automatic updates on Windows 11 - Pureinfotech.

Btw you can also schedule updates to only automatically restart windows during a particular time frame, I always set mine to be during the night so that windows always asks before restarting during daylight hours, these options can be found in the main settings section under windows update…

I wish they had some options for home edition or windows that is not for enterprise. It’s great that they give options to pro and enterprise but I’m on home edition so I’m screwed basically.

Yeah, same. I basically only use this computer for music and occasional gaming - I don’t need constant “security” updates because I’m not doing anything that exposes me to any real amount of risk. I barely even use it to surf the web.

Yeah, I thought I did that already but I’m wondering if a recent update undid that setting. Thanks for the suggestions though!

At least you still have a computer, I tried to wipe my iMac last night (using exactly the same procedure that I’ve done many, many times), and the hd is now blank but the computer totally refuses to reinstall the OS. Tried contacting Apple support and they sent me some support links that are basically the top 3 hits from Google, wow I’m so impressed with their technical knowledge :joy:

F@!king computers! This one seems to be a write off, literally in the blink of an eye… ok rant over…

Oh good god, that’s horrible. I hope you get it sorted!
