M8 Tracker

Yes, only when off or when connected with USB, if the audio interface (which I use to monitor the M8) is connected to the same power source (in my case computer).

Same here, a hum when USB & Audio connected, and the M8 is off. Switching on the M8 will stop the hum.

Thanks to all for the feedback on the hum issue. The fact that I’m apparently not alone with this quirk calms me. Now I can live with it knowing it’s normal and not a defect.

I hope that the next hardware iteration of the M8 will eliminate this problem, because it’s not what I expect from a device in this price class.

It actually sounds like it’s both normal and a defect

Spoke too soon - yes, hum when off and audio plugged in. Goes away when switched on, as per others. Guess it is a ā€˜feature’! (that’s without the USB connected - when it is I then get additional noise but I’m ok with using it on battery in that case!).

Headphones plugged in directly all fine in any configuration,

Of course I also emailed Timothy about this. It is related to the fact that the output of the M8 is a headphone output. That may explain it, but not excuse it. Other battery-operated units that only have a headphone output (e. g. AIRA compact and Volcas) don’t cause hum when turned off.

I know, this is a first world problem  But my KRK speakers take 15 seconds to ā€œbootā€, so I like to leave them on after I turn off the M8. That’s why this issue annoys me a little bit more than it should.

Thanks for the update, I thought it might be something to do with that (impedance?). Nothing that can be put in-line I guess?

I don’t know. I only know that the noise floor of the Volcas is affected by the impedance of the headphones. But that has nothing to do with any hum.

If I understood Timothy correctly, modifying the current hardware would negatively affect the headphone level. After all, that’s not what we want to happen.

My M8 is out for delivery. Hopefully it will get to my house today, where my partner is working from home and can therefore receive it.

Is there a way to identify the firmware version from within the OS?

Yes, pay attention to the bottom of the screen at startup.

When did you order yours?

BRK unit arrived, so quick to get from LA to Sydney! Can hardly notice the blemishes at all on this one! Really have to hunt for them. Nice to finally have a production unit and my partner is excited to use my beta one.

Good to hear! I ordered a BRK unit last week. For $100 off regular price, it seemed like a deal. Looking forward to receiving mine.

Same here! Hoping it will arrive within a week (Netherlands) so I can bring it on our family holiday.

I ordered mine the previous Tuesday, so it took a week and a half to arrive. Orders are shipped on a Monday, though, so maybe I would have got it in a week if I’d ordered it on the Friday!

Anyone recorded samples onto their M8 via USB? Just starting to explore the sampler and, of course, the first thing to learn is how to get samples onto the device.
I’ve copied them direct to the micro SD card…cool but while I’m sat with my Mac Book Pro thought I’d try the recording over USB. Not seeing any audio at the M8…what do I need to do to get the MBP to route audio over USB?

Edit: As so often happens…writing my question here makes me rethink the issue. Of course, the problem was just that the MBP wasn’t routing the audio over USB. Just had to select the M8 as my audio out and it all works wonderfully.
Thought I’d confess my stupidity and share the answer here rather than deleting the post in case anyone else is as dim as me.

I have to admit I’ve never attempted to sample on my M8. When I bought it (pretty early on) my intention was to load a bunch of samples, unfinished jams, riffs, stems etc onto the SD card and use it as a writing tool while traveling and that’s pretty much what I’ve done. I am surprised at how often I use it at home, but I still keep that same mindset of figuring out uses for the things I’ve loaded in there previously. Or sometimes I’ll use it at home as a midi sequencer, but something about that box makes me prefer using it standalone

M8 seems like a gamechanger. I’m afraid that if I bought one I’d end up neglecting my other gear even further than I already am currently.

I can relate to this, the form factor of something like this makes you really want to embrace the freedom of having a music gameboy that you can take anywhere at any time, that’s how I’d feel about it probably. Regardless I think I’d try hooking up various gear with it but standalone seems to be an otherworldly type of inspirational.
