Octatrack + 0-Coast : setup help required

Hey folks!

I’m looking to set my OT up with the Makenoise 0 Coast.

I’d like to be able to use the OT to control the midi and send chromatic notes to the 0 Coast and then sample the sound from it back into the OT.

Can someone share the step by step instructions on how to do this?

I think I’ll need to route the midi out from the OT into the 0 Coast and then connect the sound from the Headphone outlet from the 0 Coast into the AB/CD inputs of the OT?

Thanks in advance!

not sure what all you know about midi sequencing or sampling with the OT so it’s hard to give you every detail, step by step. what specifically are you having trouble with?

that’s mostly it as far as the sequencing part goes. assign the midi track you’re using to the corresponding midi track that the 0 Coast is looking for, and connect the midi out to the midi 1/8" adapter that the 0 Coast is using. then sequence as normal in the OT.

you’ll only need one of the AB/CD inputs though. you can use an 1/8" mono to 1/4" mono cable. or you can use an 1/8" to 1/4" stereo splitter into the AB or CD pairs; but the 0 Coast is a mono instrument, so there’s no real benefit of doing this.

and here’s some inspiration (in case you haven’t seen it):

  1. MIDI out from the OT to MIDI in of the 0Coast.
  2. Audio out of the 0Coast to only ONE input of the OT. You don’t need both. Use an UNBALANCED cable (the 0Coast acts weird if you try a balanced one).
  3. Set the thru or input machine on the OT to the input you plugged the 0Coast into.
  4. Assign an OT MIDI track to the channel for the 0Coast.
  5. Have fun. I love my 0Coast. It’s bonkers.

yes that’s what I was looking for, thanks !

nice, sounds good I’ll give it a try.

Yes the 0 Coast is amazing–I’m looking to make beats with only 0 Coast sounds including making drum sounds out of it.

I really liked this method.

I used to record loops from my 0c when I had one.

thanks, I’ll take a look

Also just in case and useful as a quick setup - on 0Coast >
Press and hold prgA.
Red light comes on saying midi is activated.
Press prgA x2.
Select midi channel on OT and goto chromatic mode to play a note.
At the same time you play a note (press a trig) hold PrgB on the 0Coast and it will midi learn.
If you’ve got the 0c going into a thru machine and the volume is up on the right input as described by @slicetwo above then you will hear it coming in.

I think Cuckoo also did a video where he created “LFO” samples he created to basically play back through the Cue outputs and into modulation points on the 0-coast using sample tracks.

Haven’t tried it myself yet but looks fun and may be worth using sample tracks.

Also remember you have a modulation source via Midi, but I think you need to program it on the 0-coast.

thanks

yea I watched that Cuckoo vid, so much can be done that it gets intimidating…

Except if you do split, you can treat each input separately as a thru track, with it’s own effects etc.

Octatrack and 0-Coast is one of my favorite setups to jam with. A few random thoughts that might be interesting while you experiment:

  • The OT gives you 8 MIDI channels to play with; you can set them all to the same MIDI channel that’s controlling the 0-Coast and write different melodies in each one. Then you can mute/unmute between them to mix up the melody as you play. If you space out the trigs/rhythms in each melody, you can get some interesting results by combining them.

  • Try running the 0-Coast into a Thru machine and then a Neighbor to stack some effects on it, and then use a Flex machine to sample what’s coming out of that Neighbor machine. That way you can capture the effected version of the signal and keep tweaking the effects on the original Thru/Neighbor tracks to evolve the live input signal.

  • Repeat the above tip as much as you want, e.g. make another Flex machine record the previous Flex machine, use different effects/trigs/LFOs on that track and then add ANOTHER Flex machine to capture what’s coming out of that one. Since all of these machines are connected by way of recording each other, the changes you make to the original tracks will send ripple effects down the chain of sampling/resampling.

I’m sure that would make more sense with a video demonstration but hopefully there’s something there that’s useful. Octatrack + mono synth gives you so many possibilities when you work this way.

Nice combo, love that synth.

Amazing – my brain just exploded. I love the 0-Coast because of its sound and sound texture and same with the OT – great texture. Combining these 2 is just… no words man.

Thank you for the suggestions really appreciate your input!

Couldn’t you still do this, and just use the same single channel audio on two tracks?

Ha, yes you could. I also thought about hardware effects pedal chains too.

always have cc 114, 116, 65, and 5 set up to add in any portamento or clock divisions you want to do. also if you want to use midi b cv for mod wheel, you need to use cc1 (at least on the DT). Otherwise you can set midi b cv to velocity and put an LFO or trig lock that.

UNBALANCED, yes! thank you

YES! Haha. It took me a while to realize it because I had accidentally plugged it in half way with a TRS and it worked fine. When I rearranged, I couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t work!
