Yeah but it should be easy to code, right?
“Its not rocket science”, apparently
With their eyes closed, indeed.
I don’t think anyone is questioning how much work it takes, but maybe they shouldn’t state Overbridge is “coming soon” if it isn’t. I don’t care enough about Overbridge to complain about it anyhow. Reading about how much work it is makes me sad all that effort was directed towards implementing PARAMETER SLIDES instead.
I get that it is a complex endeavor, but Elektron themselves told us it was nearly completed, just not quite at the finish line. DT II does not currently play well with Bitwig or Ableton on Windows; I can use the DT as a send but I can’t receive any audio whatsoever unless I plug it into my interface. I have 4 other devices with class compliant drivers that have no issues, so it is likely the DT II. So, Electron can either provide a temporary fix to its class compliant driver OR get Overbridge out as these features were both attached to its release (or maybe say “only folks on a Mac can enjoy this feature”).
Given that, I get the frustration that some basic quality of life features that exist on every other device aren’t present (i.e, being able track all 16 stereo channels at once). $1000 is a big investment for a piece of kit, and we’re not talking about a feature that was hoped for, it’s a feature that was promised in the initial announcement, so much different than the DT I rollout.
Easy solution : just pretend DT II doesn’t exist.
Is Coming Soon still relevant in 2024?
What is considered Coming Soon?
If we’re talking about a movie, Coming Soon can be almost a year.
I’m still waiting for the “Coming Soon” Potfest which was promised by Broken Lizard at the end of Beerfest in 2006…
uhmm… OB was promised at DT1 launch too…
I told you, Tuesday.
This I can agree with.
Ah, yeah! I forgot about the external inputs. I think the compressor is tied to the main mix out. Will the fx all have separate streams? That would be great, I thought they also just got sent to the mix bus.
I don’t think this is quite fair. It’s quite possible to think of a digitakt with analog-four-style polyphony, or to imagine a mode similar to the current grid mode where slice points could be moved. I can definitely imagine the latter coming at some stage.
I have a project starting in a couple of weeks and when I bought the digitakt ii back in April I felt reasonably confident that I could use it integrated into my DAW by October. I’m mildly disappointed that I can’t, but it’s no biggie. Just a disappointment. I’ll use a Push instead.
I would say that five months after the stated ‘coming soon’ it’s maybe a little harsh to accuse someone of whingeing.
I too prefer having the device sooner without overbridge, but I also think that many people see the takt/tones and overbridge as two halves of a greater whole, and without the plugin it’s only half the experience. If it stretches past six months I don’t think ‘coming soon’ was an appropriate term to use.
First of, and I can’t believe this still needs to be pointed out on a forum in 2024, if someone does not agree with you, it doesn’t mean they feel attacked. It means they just do not agree with you. Saying they do, is the lowest of fallacies in any discussion. People have opinions on a forum, mind blowing.
Second of all, the reason that people counter the “business strategy” argument, is because the argument is a dead horse that has been beaten for so long it’s almost becoming a meme at this point. They said this about pretty much every feature that has since been added across all instruments they currently sell. They actively try to add features across all the devices to the point that they hit the limit of what the dsp can handle (the impossibility of a second lfo on rytm for example, and that’s on a 14 year old instrument. Name one other company that updates their instruments with significant new functions 14 years in).
DTII has been released a few months ago. Before that DT1 received a major last update adding multiple things that nobody thought they even needed. Some of these things were pretty much 1 on 1 ported to the DTII, which, again, has been released a couple of months ago. Not sure if you followed the development of DT1 at all, but I think the current state of DTII is just the starting point. That is really what the MO of Elektron is. Not intentionally omitting features to generate sales. Rather supporting devices for many many years adding features to re-boost sales as it is continuously being worked on.
But I guess I must feel attacked by stating this argument
The point was that the total wish list they gave was far removed from what DTII currently is. One can hope. One can dream. But there’s no indication whatsoever that this will ever be implemented. Would be cool if it was though, I definitely agree. And I also encourage anyone to share their wishes and feature requests on the forum and to the therefore designated e-mail address of Elektron. Being frustrated about your personal wishlist not being available in an instrument though? eh
‘Coming Soon’ is a a little dangerous to say sure. As it is not really clearly defined. But yeah… Elektron is still a business. And maybe their view of soon is within a year? Which, in the grand scheme of things, is not that long. imho…
I hear you. I think if they do make slicing available I’ll be very confused when I try to decide between picking up my DT or Octatrack.
The new box sounds so good sonically, but the OT still offers so much.
All said though, one thing I’ve come to learn about elektron is that they do come good on their promises, it may just take a little longer than desired.
Yeah :).
Regarding slicing: Even if proper manual slicing was / becomes available on DT, OT can still do many things DTII cannot. The whole live loop mangling thing is on another level and unparalleled by any device really.
I feel like at first, omitting certain features was definitely a way to prevent too much overlap between devices.
But now I feel like this is of less importance, with the syntakt and DT2 having quite a bit of overlap.
I feel like Elektron is unique enough in terms of workflow, feel and user base that they are not that worried about devices like the MPC having significantly more features for a lower price. Or having a few overlapping features.
That being said; manual chops would be a big seller and might make the DT2 even more of an entry in the elektron world as the DT1 already was.
And on topic: OB wen?
Nobody would complain if it came to pass, but we don’t need this sort of speculation that these are diversified not because of different approaches and engine design at a fundamental level but because it’s ready and being kept away to sell twice as many products.
Design isn’t that crass, it’s tough to figure out what is essential to Elektron devices shared and what doesn’t have to be cross-tested on whatever 8 devices and many no longer in production.
Speculation is fun but also unnecessary.
It’ll be the last piece of gear I let go of… Unparalleled.
I totally miss the Product, but not the day of the week it was unveiled…
Tuesday.
I should start playing the lottery…
