You had a look at the Seq setup (Shift+Seq button) and set the right midi channel?
I guess or else they wouldn’t light up…
Thanks for your words! By sending MIDI to Ableton Live via USB to my audio interface I’ve been able to connect to the Virus, and notes are being sent! Now I have a new issue - it seems some notes are also sending program change messages, so my Virus is changing patch with every other key pressed. This is madness.
You should be able to send midi notes to the Virus.
Have you updated it to the latest OS?
Okay, I think I’m getting it. No idea where those program changes were coming from but currently controlling the Virus and Pulsar-23 at concurrently via MIDI through my audio interface. Updating the firmware now. Gonna keep playing.
Hi Claid! You mean that the usb out isn’t working?
Hi! I’ve been using USB MIDI out to Ableton Live for hours now and it’s been working without a hitch. For some reason my first experience sequencing my Virus via ‘proper’ MIDI didn’t go very well - it seemed the Oxi One’s pads were sending not only note information but program changes. Will try it again and let you know if I encounter any issues.
But guys, seriously… This thing is incredible! I loaded up one of the 64 pad drum racks in Ableton Live, had a Euclidian groove going on, assigned some velocity randomness, then used the Oxi One’s LFO to control the note being played… Then tweaked the range of the LFO to get some unique patterns going, resampled the results, spun the dice again and kept going… Let’s just say I was happy to lose an hour to it.
Hey Claid, I’ve used the midi out directly to Pulsar’s midi in without issues before. Learn functionality worked right out of the box. You may finde specially useful the CC automation capabilities on top of sending regular mono seqs to the bass module on Pulsar.
Thank you my friend, I will give it another go. I did have the device connected to my laptop via USB at the time so maybe that was causing issues.
I’ve woken up early this morning just so I can spend more time with it.
Edit: I made a bunch of minor 7 chord one-shots using Native Instruments’ Analog Dreams Kontakt instrument, utilising the Oxi One’s superb chord mode. I put the one-shots into a Drum Rack, then added a load of deep house drum samples to the rack, and sequenced the whole thing with a single instance of the Oxi One’s Multitrack mode. Wow - it’s like having an Elektron sequencer but one with a super visual 16 X 8 grid. Each step of the sequencer can be a different MIDI note, and it’s as simple as holding the step and turning an encoder, just like with an Elektron device. Changing velocity and gate are just as easy.
I got a typical four to the floor pattern going, added a clap, threw in a tom. I then used one lane of the sequencer to program an open/closed hat with two different samples by ‘p-locking’ the note per step. I then added those chord stabs one another lane - bouncing between a few of them with the ‘p-lock’ method, and as it’s a Drum Rack the samples don’t cut each other off.
I then programmed a bassline with the Oxi One on a Mono track. Got a nice groove going, then started playing with the randomise function to add nice fills, before using the Undo function to revert back to the original pattern.
Having a fab time with this thing, recording the MIDI into Ableton Live, picking out sections to come up with various patterns and making songs from them. Appreciate I’m very much in the honeymoon phase, but can’t imagine falling out of love with it to be honest.
That was terrific!
@fffiiissshhh and me are glad to finally show you this!
Yes, the OXI screen was an issue. Will be better in future videos, thanks to lower LED brightness
So with the BLE MIDI feature, my best options for standard midi ports and sequencing multiple synths would be the CME WIDI Master?
There a reason why I’d go with any of their other products like the WIDI Jack if I don’t need TRS MIDI?
Yesterday I used the Oxi One to sequence SugarBytes’ Drum Computer VST hosted in Ableton Live. Had the Oxi One generating random patterns on a single Multitrack row. Between the Oxi One random patterns and Drum Computer’s random kit function, I ended up with 20 or so resampled loops which I added to my library. Really nice sounding as well with all velocity variation.
The beginning of a jam I did last night with a good friend. Nothing too special, just want to get myself more into publishing mode. Audio is pretty raw.
Sounds good but quite low output.
Just a tip: I’m using Meldaproductions MLimiterX to boost/maximize tracks and it’s great for that. You can press it hard without distorting.
I’ve looked into their stuff, but never pulled the trigger. I’ve had fairly good luck with Izotope Ozone 9 for getting decent levels, but if something’s better out there, I’m open!
Thanks for the recommendation! Does it require lots of tweaking?
I really just did simple balancing of the two stereo sums because I tend to get lost in the details once I start mastering and the chance of publishing dramatically decreases
It is very simple and easy to use and has presets for maximizing that will work with any material. It cuts peaks (and gains correspondingly) so it does not change dynamics.
It can be bought for half price when it’s part of their eternal madness discount or on Black Friday.
Ozone has got you covered. I don’t use it myself but I believe their limiter is just as efficient.
yeah ive been using Ozone for years and its been WAY more than I need.
