Returning DT2 - I Think I’m Out

I think I’m going return it, leave it a year and keep an eye on the forum.

I have a few days left of my return period on my purchase and I think although I love the updates of DT2 from DT1, this atrocious file transfer rate is the straw to break the camels back for me… it’s totally unreliable right now (four crashes for me). It’s this that gave me what alcoholics refer to as ‘a moment or clarity’ (stolen from Trainspotting) and made me realise I’m out and I’m 99% going to return it.

Unlike others who have a bigger investment, I feel I’m not as unconditionally in love with the Elektron ecosystem. Elektron’s position seems to be rather bizarre on this flagship follow-up release - the lists have begun and I fear I’m going to unite in the lengthy customer-paid beta testing program that is already underway, which I don’t have time for.

The super slow file transfer speeds, no USB 3, pitiful +Drive size, +Drive crashes, no SD card slot, no zero point snapping, weird rigid grid based sample chopping, and then simple stuff like mono files not included… all this in an expensive £900 box.

It’s my own fault, I should have waited, done my research more carefully. Never had such hardware limits on a new release like this before.

BUT the new OS is a delight and many other features are really superb, but I think I’m caught up in the hype already clinging onto the hope of 1.whatever updates. in a months time, after I’ve written more shitty music (haha), I’ll probably regret it, so it’s got to go back.

Not to worry, I still have DT1 to stare blankly at…

None of these things bother me much (i don’t have to transfer a library, i liked the digitakt sampling when it only had one shot) and I expect them to update pretty regularly to iron out bugs. If it’s not something you NEED in your setup, it’s probably a good idea to return and use the Digi I.

For me, the pros outweigh the cons and I love the Elektron workflow and Digi 1 so much it only makes sense to upgrade and wait out a patch or two for some odd bugs.

Sorry it didn’t work out for you but hope you spend that returned cash on something that does!

I dont have the DT2 (nor the DT1 but Im heavily considering it now that is 350 euros second hand haha) but I think I can agree on some very basic sampler features omissions. And how that is absolutely not acceptable for such a high priced instrument released in 2024.

I think they will eventually fix that and like most elektron instruments this one will probably been ten times better in 3 years than it is right now. No need to buy it this early if you don’t absolutely need it

Get a second hand OT mk1.
Solves all those gripes. Cheaper too.
Drag and drop file transfer no app needed, quicker than you can blink.

Agree with the OP - i have cancelled my order because of the bugs thread. The issues listed here are some of the same reasons I have.

Also the other glaring issue is the low volume on the external inputs, low sampling and resampling volume.

I’m sure these issues will be addressed but until they are the DT II is not going to work for me.

I really hope they fix soon as do want DT II to work ‘properly’. Ie be able to record and load samples without issues.

Will definitely be ordering when its fixed!

sticking with my OT MK2 as works great. Roland SP 404 MK2 is lot of fun in different sampler way.

Sounds like you’ve got some big feelings. Let it all out, we’re here for you. Buyer’s remorse is a helluva thing.

And by Trainspotting, you actually mean Pulp Fiction

C’mon guy, get it right

Did you peel the film off the screen yet?

Thanks for reminding me!!

Boy, there are some salty 'nauts here!

You may not agree with the assessment, but OP gave concrete reasons for coming to the conclusion they did and pointed out their own error.

I agree with you on the slow transfer rate. It’s 2024, why USB-B? A USB-C would be 4 times faster, especially if they decided not to include SD card. Other than that, I like their new workflow. It’s one of those boxes that will take time to grown into.

I said this in another thread, but what got me to cancel my order was the realization that it’s more Digitakt.

It takes the existing DT design and pumps everything up.
Just about every spec is at least doubled, and there are some nice usability/feature upgrades on top of that.

But the price has almost doubled increased a lot too, and nothing has fundamentally changed about what the box is, or how it operates.

It’s a better Digitakt in every way - but it’s still a Digitakt - and now it’s $1000.

And maybe that’s not an issue for many here.
I’m sure it’s exactly what a lot of people were hoping for as an update to their DT.

But for me, its price pushes it close enough to the territory of a ‘flagship’ device that I’m starting to look at what is missing at that price point, more than what is there.
There’s no sample editor, polyphony, arp, midi retrigger, parameter slides, slicing off-grid.
It doesn’t support USB-C/PD, multi-channel class-compliant audio over USB, or have more than stereo audio outputs.

Those are the things that would actually change how I use the device.

I swear one of the day-one reviews said an updated version of Transfer was in development, and it would use USB file transfers rather than USB MIDI to copy samples over to the device, speeding that up dramatically.

But I’m not sure where it was that I heard that, and I’ve not seen it referenced anywhere since.

Hopefully that’s something which actually happens, because dealing with Transfer on the DT1 is annoying enough when it only has a 1GB limit rather than DT2’s 20GB.

the OP and the post above this one are both Valid… Elektrons mama didn’t raise no fools, I am sure we are in good hands on this one, anything else would be an unforced error of unsavory proportions and we don’t want that. A little bit of time and it will all be sublime!!

are u positive about this charge? id say hes definitely a scalar boson…

I think these complaints are valid and this thread is valid. It’s easy enough to ignore or not engage. It’s ok to be negative; it’s better than hiding one’s thoughts imo.

I stand corrected - it was late!
