Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II

The speaker will never be as good as a portable sound bar, none of this stuff has that except like a mpc… they all sound bad… this one has a speaker the size of a quarter… what do you expect?
Said that I can hear bass drums on mine fine I guess… not sub bass or anything.
You know they’re is a master compressor? Without that on you can barely hear anything… try running that up a little.

Imo the speaker is truly terrible. Worse than the op-Z speaker. Borderline useless except for finger drumming

I’ve asked this before but i wonder how easy it is to replace the speaker?

Good question. I’m not a mechanical engineer or an acoustics person, but I’d imagine that some of the KO speaker quality is the case surrounding it, too, right?

And yeah, the one I borrowed sounded atrocious. Marginally better than an original PO. Still fun, though. As long as you got used to it and knew what it would do — or as people say, use a better external one — it was fine.

just for fun i did a quick and dirty side by side speaker volume comparison between the ep133 and the op-1f. the op-1f is way better of course, but the ep133 holds its own.

when i speak about why i like the speaker, its because i like the volume and grit it can push out. when people speak of it being not so good, are we speaking fidelity, volume, or both?

i have the master compressor release up all the way, then i bring up the drive. yes this does drastically effect the sound but thats also the point for me, i can see why thats not something people always want to do.

made this tune today while watching a car show go on outside my window. car shows are funny, i like the broad crowd they draw. i sampled some chords and synth one shots off the reface cs and did the beat making on the ep133, recorded and fx’d everything on the sp404. i did way more fader automation than i normally do, i like the wild feel, especially in the back half.

Using it for two days and I love it!
Good job TE.

My personal wish list would looks like this:

Scene chaining - for obvious reason, I am a guitar player and have only 2 hands
(by holding MAIN, click RECORD, click ± for scene, click PLAY for next step)

Punch FX recording - the same reason, I need them to be baked in the patterns

Internal resampling - would be fine, but not that crucial

Otherwise the unit is perfect!
I prefer grid pads for composing the melodies over normal keyboard. Just a habit from my old Roland drum machines.
Cheers

Does the ko2 really not have any midi input channel settings?

Want to use my keystep to syntakt and then midi through to ko2, but ko2 notes are triggered all the time when trying play only the syntakt on its auto ch,

Think if ko2 dont have any settings for input midi channels its the biggest failure ever

might as well return the biggest failure ever im afraid

i dont see a whole lot of potential benefits by controlling the ep133 externally that way, i guess if the goal is to use it as a 6/12 voice poly sample synth but theres really nothing else much you could do other than play the notes. it technically receives CC’s but theres no CC implementation chart so it seems it wasnt a part of the plan. so its kind of a failure in the sense that it wasnt designed to be a complexly controlled poly sample synth.

too soon for baseless speculation but maybe one of the next EPs will be a 1010 tangerine type full fledged multisampler, gotta assume they are planning on spreading out some features across the devices. they werent setting out to make an all-in-one, its the start of a series. but, if i had to guess, none of the EP series will get very complex in that way.

Just a guess, but what about turning off midi thru on the ST and instead using an ST midi track to trigger the EP?

Its needed to have some option to choose input channels otherwise cant use it for any dawless setup with more than 1 thing in it…

Want to have a keystep (midi keyboard) to play the digitone and syntakt, and same time have ko2 connected to syntakt midi through so it recieve clock/transport, but it listen on all channels all the time so it recieves same notes that syntakt recieves when i play that one…

Think midi input ch selection should been a day 1 update for ko2. Its strange because it has midi output ch selection

i misunderstood what you were trying to do, i thought you were trying to play samples on the ep133 with the keystep.

just a guess and it seems like this may change your overall setup, but would this be usable? the ep133 is syncable via sync pulses. unfortunately doesnt help with program changes though.

Midi in on ko2 is the only one that can sync the transport from the elektrons
Want play the samples with the ko2 keys, but the syntakt with the keyboard. Syntakt have auto ch 14 so thats the ch going to syntakt, but since need midi through to sync/transport, the ko2 also recieves ch14 notes, so if it was possible to change ko2 to only listen ch 1 for example it would solve the problem…
All gear ive ever had before have had channel selection for midi.

i see, yeah that sounds frustrating.

im reading about din 24 syncing right now and from my surface level skimming it sounds like it should be able to send start/stop data. in the ep133 manual under the “syncing to vintage drum machines part” it says “press play on both machines at the same time” so i guess they werent expecting any transport control. sorry this isnt helpful!

even though that is frustrating, there’s hope in the fact that it’s such a basic non-groundbreaking, ruin the vibe feature request that hopefully they’ll see fit to address it

I have a question regarding sampling.
Can I record a sample while it is playing a scene?
I would love to be able to play a midi sequence (on the ko2) and record the synth output back into ko2. Is this possible?

unfortunately no, cant sample with the sequence running

Thank you. I guess, I will have to dig up my zoom recorder.

I really like using the ko2 as a midi sequencer. It would be cool to sample those sequences and just disconnect all the gear and use the ko2 stand alone. Well let’s hope this feature will come in the near future, I use my zoom recorder as a workaround now.

This video helped me get a handle on what is going on with patterns and scenes. I wish I had watched it sooner. I don’t like the way it auto-saves and shifts things around, but now I do understand what is going on.
